과거 펄스(pulse) 방식의 다이얼 전화기와 기계식 교환기를
사용할 때는 당연히 * # 이 없었습니다.

그러다가 톤(tone) 방식의 버튼식 전화기와 전자교환기를 사용하게 되면서,
여러가지 부가기능 및 프로그램에 이용하기 위해 여분의 기능키(function key)가 필요해진거죠.

* 와 # 가 구체적으로 어떤 기능을 하는가는 교환기의 프로그램에 따라
달라집니다.

예컨대 큰 회사에서 자체 교환실을 운영하는 경우를 보면, 통화중 '*' + '6'을 누르면
전화를 끊지 않고 제3자에 연결할 수 있다든가, 3명 이상이 동시에 통화할 수 있다든가,
하는 많은 기능이 있습니다.

물론 위는 예로 든 것이고, 어떤 기능키와 어떤 숫자를 조합하여 어떤 기능이
발휘되는지는 교환기와 프로그램에 따라 다릅니다.

키폰 시스템의 경우 기능키(* #)와 숫자를 조합하여 프로그램밍도 가능합니다.
예컨대 옛날에 삐삐를 많이 쓸 때에 테이블마다 전화기를 놓는 까페가 많았는데,
이 때 국제전화를 발신을 막아놓는 것이 보통이지만, 어느 해커가 강남의 어느 까페에서,
키폰 프로그램을 해킹해서 수백만원어치 국제전화를 하는 바람에 키폰회사에
그 인물을 긴급 수배한 적도 있습니다.

아뭏든 기능키의 용도는 교환기에서 제공하는 여러가지 부가기능을 이용하기
위한 것이랍니다.

물론 이외에도 현재는 음성메세지를 남긴다든가 할 때 아주 유용하게
쓰이고 있습니다.

※ 키폰은 사무실에서 사용되는 다기능 전화기입니다.
