미국 텍사스 대학 사우스웨스턴 메디컬센터 당뇨병연구소의 필립 쉐러 박사는의학전문지 '임상연구 저널(Journal of Clinical Investigation)' 최신호(8월23일자)에 실린 연구논문에서 칼로리 섭취량이 많아도 이를 지방조직에 저장할 능력이 있는사람은 당뇨병에 걸리지 않는다고 밝힌 것으로 헬스데이 뉴스가 24일 보도했다.
그러나 과도하게 섭취한 지방을 지방조직에서 더이상 수용할 능력이 없어 어쩔수 없이 간(肝)과 근육조직으로 가 쌓이게 될 때는 인슐린저항이 나타나면서 당뇨병에 걸리게 된다고 쉐러 박사는 밝혔다.
쉐러 박사는 지나치게 섭취된 지방이 어느 곳에 저장되느냐는 유전자에 의해 결정되는 것으로 보인다고 말했다.
쉐러 박사는 일단의 쥐들을 유전조작해 인슐린민감성을 높이는 호르몬인 아디포넥틴은 과잉분비되고 식욕을 억제하는 호르몬인 렙틴은 결핍되게 만든 결과 쥐들은엄청나게 먹으면서 완전히 뚱보쥐가 되었지만 인슐린저항도 나타나지 않고 당뇨병에도 걸리지 않았다고 밝혔다.
이 쥐들은 과잉섭취된 칼로리를 간, 근육, 심장조직이 아닌 지방조직에 모두 저장한 것으로 밝혀졌다고 쉐러 박사는 말했다.
쉐러 박사는 이 쥐실험 결과는 단순히 지방섭취량 자체가 전체적인 건강의 지표가 되는 것은 아니며 과잉섭취된 칼로리가 체내의 어느 장소에 저장되느냐가 중요한문제임을 보여주는 것이라고 말하고 "지방은 마치 부동산과 같아서 위치가 어디냐가 가장 중요하다"고 지적했다.
그렇다고 마음놓고 살이 쪄도 된다는 얘기는 절대 아니라고 쉐러 박사는 덧붙였다. <연합>
