서울시내한 헬스클럽. 저녁 9시가 넘은 시각인데도 클럽 안은 운동을 하고 있는 직장인들로 북적북적하다. 그중에서도 특히 눈에 띄는 것은 젊은 남성들 틈에서 덤벨과 바벨을 들어올리며 땀흘리는 중년 남성들. 이곳 트레이너에 따르면 최근 들어 배우 권상우나 가수 비처럼 근육을 키우고 싶다는 중년 회원들이 부쩍 늘었다고 한다.
‘잘 빠진’ 몸매로 인기몰이를 하는 젊은 남자 연예인들을 보면서 ‘나도 왕년엔…’ ‘10년만 젊었어도…’라며 쓴 입맛을 다시는 중년 남성들. 멋진 근육질 몸매에 대한 열망이 어찌 젊은 남성들만의 것이겠는가. 마음만은 20대 부럽지 않은 40대 이상 중년들이 이젠 ‘약수터 운동’ 대신 헬스클럽으로 모여들어 가슴과 복근운동에 열을 올리고 있다. 탄탄한 가슴 근육 아래로 또렷하게 드러나는 ‘왕(王)’자. 몸짱 아줌마에 이어 몸짱 아저씨들로 늦은 저녁 헬스클럽의 열기는 뜨겁기만 하다.
